At the outbreak of war, the Belgian Field Army strategy was to delay the German invaders and hold out until French and British troops were able to mobilise to support them. Belgian divisions were large (up to 32,000 men) and included three or four mixed brigades, a cavalry regiment, an artillery regiment and an engineer battalion.
