Reconnaissance teams are the eyes and ears of the modern army. In the German army, these teams were typically small groups of specially-trained soldiers who were sent to operate behind enemy lines. In addition to collecting information about enemy troop deployments, these teams could intercept enemy communications, sabotage vulnerable sites, and act as secret observers for artillery fire and airstrikes. Under the Geneva and Hague Conventions, recon teams are not considered spies, as long as they are in uniform. But since the survival of these small teams was dependent upon avoiding contact with the enemy, they were often equipped with special camouflage uniforms, different from those worn by regular troops.
